Your Prince is but a Pauper in a Foreign Land

A couple weeks ago I received a phone call that was sadly a repeat of conversations I have had many times before. Same conversation, same outcome, different people. What conversation is that? It goes something like this -

<<After introductions, etc.>>
Caller: My son is interested in taking Karate at your place. (we don't teach Karate but I go along with them)
Me: Great, how old is he?
Caller: He is __ years old. He has been doing Karate since he was ___ years old. He studies/d with ___________. He is _____________ Belt and he is very good.
Me: <already knowing what is coming next I say> Oh, that is excellent. How can we help you?
Caller: Well, my son would like to take classes there. <here it comes> Will he be able to keep his current rank?
Me: No, I'm sorry, but he will have to start over, it is a completely different style, and different school.
Caller: <A sigh of disappointment is followed by a question of defiance> But, why? He has earned his rank?

It does not matter how the conversation continued, you get the idea. No matter what I say in these conversations with various people, it always ends the same -- they never sign up at my school, and they invariably find some school that will take them in and let them keep their current rank. Personally, I question the integrity of any teacher that does that for a buck, but to each their own, it is not my point in this post.

I find this situation discouraging of course; as losing potential students is always a downer. But more importantly, I find this extremely disappointing on a societal level. With our current culture of - 'every child gets a trophy just for showing up, or even if they lose', or in martial arts specifically - 'you get promoted just for showing up'.  Now there is a creeping expectation that successes in one field/area automatically guarantee the same credentials in another art/trade/field?

A carpenter with 5 years experience doesn't take up plumbing and automatically get 5 years of experience in plumbing. Both are trades, both use tools, both require some technical skills/background, but the two are completely different. The same exists with a doctor who graduates school in the field of Radiology. They don't just switch to Orthopedic Surgery without going back to school/training. A Chemist doesn't become a Physicist just because they switched careers/companies no matter how successful they were in Chemistry.

I write this to hopefully educate people, as well as do my part to prevent some creeping expectation, that is wholly unreasonable, from worming it's way into the societal norm. There are 100's of different styles of martial arts in the world. There are 10's of thousands of teachers and schools. When you earn a rank in one style it will typically help you to learn a new style, but not guarantee it.

Our past experience: coordination we gained, balance, flexibility; strength, endurance, familiarity with and exposure to martial arts, will all help us to gain skill and thereby rank, in our new school/style/art. It does not however grant us skills by proxy, or guarantee that we are a superstar in that style.

Nowhere should there exist an automatic transfer of rank in martial arts, except possibly, and not always, from one school to another. If said school teaches the same style, and is preferably in the same system then I can see the relevance of course.

I have two female students that were both Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do before coming to my school. Both of them emptied their cups and hung up their previous ranks when starting new arts. They threw out their egos and humbly put on White Belts when they started Kung Fu and Tai Chi with me. Amazing example.

At the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school I attend, a student came from another BJJ school with a Brown Belt. They let him keep his rank (as it was the same style) and he joined the class and proceeded to roll (spar) with his new classmates. After rolling with people, he took off his Brown Belt, handed it to the teacher, and asked the teacher to give him a Purple Belt to wear (a step down in rank). He knew he didn't deserve the rank he had, even though it was the same style, and that he had that earned rank in another school. This is the ULTIMATE in humility, and to be highly praised and respected.

I have another student that was granted an intermediate rank. He later turned it in saying he wasn't ready for it. I had tightened standards since the time he received his, and he humbly traded his belt in for the next one down. He is still working hard to this day to earn back that rank.

"A full cup can hold no more tea..."

One of my students said at graduation when they messed up a demonstration - "Like a first day student" (I paraphrase). I chuckled and said - "we should always be like a first day student". When changing from one thing to the next, we must empty that cup of ours. Just because we are a Prince in our land, doesn't mean we are anything more than a Pauper in someone else's.

First Red Sash in Tai Chi - Congrats Helena!

Congratulations Helena Svobodova! Today I was honored to present Helena with the highest rank in Tai Chi at Plum Blossom Fitness Martial Arts. She is the first to achieve this, and the highest rank I have promoted someone to in 9 years of running my school.

"You stand at the beginning of a long, hard road the likes of which you have never trod.
Others will fall by your side, unable to persist.
They will try to pull you down; distract, deter, or disturb you with words.
Stay true to the course.
Only the dream in your heart will keep you going.
Courage and patience are your swords. Use them wisely."

8 years of dedication to an art pays off.
Helena started Tai Chi with me 8 years ago when my school was less than a year old. We were still in Westford, MA, and I was in the midst of renovating our new location we were moving into. Helena immediately volunteered her spare time to help out.
Immigrating from the Czech Republic, Helena was interested in pursuing the art of Tai Chi while she searched for a job as a chemist, her primary trade. Her husband Pavel was fully supportive and also helped out when he could.

Helena has been committed to her Tai Chi training for 8 years now, rarely faltering. From studying a bit of Kung Fu, attending workshops & retreats, to training in Monster-Fit and even introductions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Helena has proven her dedication to self-improvement above and beyond Tai Chi.

Helena has shared her enjoyment of Tai Chi with others for the past few years by instructing Tai Chi classes for all ages here at Plum Blossom Fitness Martial Arts, and assisting with the operations of the school. We are lucky to have her as a part of the school, and I am extremely honored to present her with - the first and highest rank I have given - a Red Sash in Plum Blossom's Tai Chi program.

I picked up a nasty cold while traveling to Austin so I haven't been with it enough to write this follow-up.  I did want to tell all of you at Austin Fitness Martial Arts, what a great job you did in my Striking/Mantis Boxing workshop at the Madhouse Retreat 2012.  Thanks for a great time and awesome hospitality as usual.  Great food, excellent training, and even better...the students.

It was a pleasure to work with all of you and I look forward to returning.  Long live the Mantis!  -

2012 Boston Open - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament

Yesterday (Saturday, August 26, 2012) was the 2012 Boston Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament.  Master Brown and Laoshi Cyr signed up to compete in the tournament representing Plum Blossom Fitness Martial Arts and Best Way Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Hoping to learn the ropes (or the mats) - rules, format, systems, etc. so that they can bring some of the Plum Blossom students to future tournaments.

Randy Brown straight ahead in the far ring.
While it was a great experience and a very well run tournament, unfortunately there was a snag.  Laoshi Cyr was signed up online under the wrong division.  They are so strict at this tournament (in order to keep it running smooth and on time) that they do not allow you to change divisions the day of the tournament.  So sadly she did not get to roll with anyone yesterday but she's very much looking forward to the next opportunity.
Respect - Randy Brown with his BJJ teacher Andre 'Dedeco' Almeida

Master Brown entered the Featherweight, Senior 1 White Belt Division and faced off with his opponent around 5:45pm.  Laoshi Cyr says the match was quite a nail biter from the sidelines with each fighter vying for better position and control.  After sweeps, counters, guard passes, and reversals, at about 4 minutes into the match, Master Brown found an opportunity to lock in a partial triangle causing his opponent to try and break free.  As his opponent was working to free himself, Master Brown saw the opening for an inverted arm bar and locked it in.  Winning by submission.
Bringing home the Gold.

"I had an excellent opponent - skilled, fit, strong, and an admirable fighter.  He fought well and fought hard.  In the end, I am grateful to have had the opportunity.  Thanks go out to my BJJ teacher Master Andre 'Dedeco' Almeida, my Mantis teacher Master Tony Puyot who encouraged me to learn BJJ a few years ago, and all the students at Plum Blossom that I learn from and train with." - Master Brown

Kids Sparring and Gear

Sparring

If you've watched the kids class lately, or perhaps your child has come home excited about something different, you've seen or heard that we've re-introduced sparring into the kids classes.  The kids are loving it and it is an excellent tool to improve their martial arts skills, and try to make their moves work.  The value of sparring in martial arts is priceless.

By now you've seen the schedule change and noticed we have tacked on an extra 15 minutes to the kids classes (except for Saturdays).  This is to allow time to incorporate this into the class structure without losing valuable time for their other training.  We think this will be a great addition to the program and look forward to the results.
Fun. Safe. Effective.

Gear Requirements

Kids Kung Fu

There will be two types of sparring in Kids Kung Fu.

  1. Striking Defense - Punch, Block, Kick.  This requires padded gear for protection.  If you already have gear, please make sure your child brings it to class with them on Monday and Wednesday.  If you do not have gear, please see us right away and we'll get you on the list when we order our approved gear.  Gear includes: helmet, gloves, shin and foot pads.  Groin and Mouth Guards.
  2. Stand-Up Grappling - Praying Mantis Kung Fu is all about grappling.  The kids currently learn throws/trips/takedowns, but this will help them know how to use them.  This requires mouthguard and groin protector, as well as their Gi with Jacket.  Please ensure your child has their Gi Jacket with them for class.  If they do not have a jacket, please see us and we will help you to get one asap.

Kids BJJ

Kids BJJ involves rolling with a partner to make the moves work.  Nothing has changed in this class except allowing us more time for rolling as class was too short before to spend ample time doing it.  Gi is required for this class.  Please ensure your child has a Gi for BJJ class.

Thank you for your support.  We look forward to not only the fun, but the confidence, and skill that your children will gain from this.

Gear Return Program

Kids outgrow stuff all the time.  Do you have old gear that no longer fits and just sits in your closets?  You can do one of the following:
  1. Either donate it back to the program so we can give it to another child.
  2. Or we'll even buy it back from you to resell.  Just bring it in to be appraised.

2012 Fall Schedule Changes

Schedule Changes (effective Sept. 4th)

We're updating the schedule for this fall to help accommodate some improvements in our programs.  The Kids Kung Fu and BJJ are now going to be 1 hour in length instead of 45 minutes during the weekdays.  Saturdays will remain the same time.

This will allow more time for instruction as well as sparring (see upcoming post on sparring and gear).  It does however require a shift in some of our evening class time slots in order to make room.  See the new schedule below to see how it affects your Fit-Kick, Adult Kung Fu, and BJJ classes.

'Kid Power' Workshop

Plum Blossom Fitness Martial Arts presents

Power Building Boxing - for Kids

For one week this summer, Plum Blossom Fitness Martial Arts is proud and excited to offer this special workshop just for kids.  No Experience Required.

A classic Kung Fu set that has been passed down from generation to generation to build strength, power, conditioning, and coordination.  'Gong Li Quan' - translated as 'Power Building Boxing', is a solo set that has been used by Kung Fu practioners for 100's of years, to improve their skill and form while building muscle and tendon strength in a fun and entertaining manner.

Clans such as Eagle Claw, Long Fist, Chin Woo Institute, and Praying Mantis families, all use 'Power Building Boxing' as a prepatory form in their curriculae before a student moves on to more complex sets. Fun and easy to learn, a great precursor to such advanced styles as Mantis or Tai Chi.

August 27, 28, 29, 30 from 9:30am to 10:30am.

Must be age 7 and up.
