New martial arts program teaches kids safe ways to deal with bullying, and not be victims. Every class covers a new, real-world situation.
Littleton, MA September 23, 2008: Randy Brown, owner and chief instructor of Plum Blossom Academy in Littleton MA, knows what it’s like to be the victim of schoolyard bullies. In a new program starting in late September, kids ages 9 and up will be able to practice real skills, in real situations, that work in the real world. Under the watchful eyes of skilled martial artists, the kids will learn how to defend themselves from bullies – someone trying to push you over, someone pulling your hair or hooded sweatshirt, someone grabbing an arm to upset your balance.
“I was always one of the smallest kids in my class, and I was picked on quite a bit”, remembered Brown. In spite of the prevalence of anti-bullying programs in many local schools, the bullying continues. “I get several calls a week, without fail, from parents wanting to know how Chinese martial arts training could help their kids. Why do the parents call? Their child is getting bullied in school. The fact is, a trusted adult cannot be watching over a kid every second of every day. The kids who get picked on can effectively defend against common assaults. With a little specialized knowledge, and some practice in a safe environment, anybody can learn basic self defense”.
This new kids program is based on Plum Blossom Academy’s highly regarded Self Defense seminars. Each week in the kids program, participants learn a new non- lethal skill and are practicing each technique in minutes, not months or years. The new No Bullies program is based around a dozen common situations that would represent how a child might be assaulted by a bully: pushing, grabbing, pulling of hair, etc. Each week will focus on a specific situation. Children will practice effective defense actions that could be applied immediately, if required. According to Brown, “everything we teach must meet the “3 E” criteria: it must be effective, efficient, and easy to learn”.
In each class, every child will walk out the door with the basics of defending themselves in a particular bullying situation. “It’s not about strength; it’s about knowing what to do and how to do it” states Brown. Part of this program is dedicated to educating parents and family members as well as children.
